Everyone has a story to tell…

But sometimes it helps to have another pair of eyes on your work. I am a former Interviews Editor at The Rumpus and former Fiction Editor for The Fabulist Words and Art. I served as a Developmental Editor for The Collective Book Studio where I edited Malkah’s Notebook—a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. I am an alum of the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Tin House Writers Workshop and Lit Camp Writers Conference, and I’ve edited many novels and dozens of short stories for myself and others. My short stories and essays have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net.

I will review your work and provide feedback with regard to story structure, plotting, character development, pacing, voice, language, or other areas of concern you may have. I can also give advice regarding story submissions and tricks of the trade.

Testimonials

“The feedback I’ve received on my short stories and novel from Elizabeth has consistently hit the mark. She is capable of pulling sentences and paragraphs that need revision out of dark corners into the open. In her edits she is not afraid where to say cut. The result is you have clarity, and a tighter piece of writing.” — DB FINNEGAN

“Elizabeth’s incisive, insightful feedback cuts to the heart of the matter in just a few words. She both celebrates what you’re doing well, and kindly and clearly guides you towards ways to improve. I highly recommend her!” — SARAH BARDEEN

“I’ve had all manner of writing given a once over by Elizabeth Gonzalez James and her notes and thoughts are beyond helpful. She is detailed, insightful and willing to have the hard conversations about where your work is and where it needs to go. Even better, she’s able to do so while inspiring you to get back to the writing, to do the work to make what you already have even better.” — NOAH SANDERS

“I first met Elizabeth at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and was struck not just by her beautiful writing, but also by her always insightful comments in our workshop. As a result, I was thrilled when she agreed to review a draft of my novel. The comments I received from her were extraordinarily helpful. She combined deep insights about larger narrative structure with a keen eye for the details of writing. Her comments were everything I had hoped for as I began my next round of revisions, and I have no doubt my manuscript will be far more compelling due to her review.” — TAMAR SHAPIRO

“Elizabeth’s genuine and insightful notes helped me re-envision how I thought of storytelling. Her thought-provoking questions and commitment to improving my craft left me eager to revise, and made my work more concise.” – ASHLEY JEAN GRANILLO
